Notion New Features 2026: The October Agent Rebuild
What actually changed in Notion's 2026 AI release: 24-hour agents, the Auto model router, ChatGPT-plan connections.
Notion
Notion shipped its biggest AI change of the year on October 19, 2026, and the headline (“agents can run for 24 hours”) is not the part that will affect most teams. The part that will affect most teams is the quieter one: Business and Enterprise seats stop being unlimited on AI. From November 2, 2026, every member gets 1,500 Standard credits and 500 Select credits per month, they do not roll over, they do not pool, and when they run out the work pauses.
This is a tracker update, not a full review — for the tool itself see our Notion review, and for the category context see the main project management comparison.
TL;DR
- Agents now run up to 24 hours on a single task, up from about five minutes, on rebuilt infrastructure with durable execution, its own computer/browser, and a “Review for me” safety pass.
- Auto is now a model router, not a model choice. Notion claims results “similar to Opus 5.5 and Astra” at about 90% lower average cost across 20+ common tasks — a vendor-run evaluation, not an independent one.
- The credit system is the real change. Business and Enterprise seats include 1,500 Standard credits (Notion picks the model) and 500 Select credits (you pick the model, or run your own Custom Agents) per member per month. New workspaces are on it now; existing workspaces switch on November 2, 2026.
- Plan pricing is unchanged: Plus $10 and Business $20 per member/month billed annually, Free $0, Enterprise quoted.
- The trap is the gap between the two buckets. Notion’s own per-task estimates put a simple task at ~5 credits on Auto versus ~50 on Opus 5.5. At those rates, 1,500 Standard credits covers 300 simple tasks a month while 500 Select credits covers 10 on a frontier model.
- Best for: teams already on Business who use Notion AI for writing, search, and meeting notes. Not for teams whose Custom Agents pin specific models — those draw from the small bucket.
What shipped on October 19
1. The agent harness, generation six. Notion rebuilt the runtime behind Notion Agent and Custom Agents around durable execution: each session runs on a dedicated service with a queue-backed worker loop, so a task survives restarts. That is what makes multi-hour runs possible. Agents also get their own computer and browser, which lets them write and execute short scripts instead of burning tokens on the same work.
2. Auto, the model router. Auto no longer means “a cheap default.” It reads the task and routes to a model balancing quality, speed, and cost, and re-routes if a model stalls. Notion says credits “go about 10× further” as a result. Treat the 90% figure as a vendor claim: it comes from Notion’s own testing on 20+ task types, and there is no independent benchmark behind it.
3. Bring your own AI. You can connect a ChatGPT Plus, Pro, or Go subscription to your personal Notion Agent — this is live now and covers the personal agent, not Custom Agents. Bring Your Own Key is in private alpha for Enterprise only.
4. Notion MCP, rebuilt. Memory sync is live; Skills over MCP is announced but not shipped. Admins get MCP controls that show who connected which tool and let them revoke one connection without touching the others.
5. AI Command Center — usage dashboards by member, feature, and agent; spending limits; model restrictions; agent governance. Coming, not live as of this writing.
6. The credit system — covered in full below.
The credit system, in detail
| Standard credits | Select credits | |
|---|---|---|
| Monthly per member | 1,500 | 500 |
| Spent on | Anything where Notion picks the model (Auto), including AI Meeting Notes from Dec 1, 2026 | Picking a model yourself in Notion Agent; Custom Agents you set up for your own use |
| Rollover | None | None |
| Shared between members | No | No |
| Can be combined | No | No |
Three details do more damage than the headline number:
The buckets don’t move. You cannot convert a surplus of Standard credits into Select credits. A team that never touches a named model and runs three Custom Agents will run out of Select credits while sitting on unused Standard credits.
Running out pauses work, it does not offer a top-up. Per Notion’s credit help documentation, once Standard or Select credits are exhausted, “impacted work will pause until your credits reset.” Continued use requires an admin to enable workspace Notion credits — a separate purchased balance — and that is an admin action, not a member action. There is no “buy more” button for the individual.
AI Meeting Notes starts metering on December 1, 2026. Notion estimates ~10 Standard credits for a one-hour meeting. A team that lives in meeting notes should model that before it happens, not after.
Notion’s per-task estimates, published in the same help doc, are the most useful numbers in the whole announcement:
| Task type | Auto (Standard credits) | Opus 5.5 (Select credits) |
|---|---|---|
| Simple (polish an email, translate, draft a reply) | ~5 | ~50 |
| Medium (work report, find a document, triage inbox) | ~10 | ~85 |
| Complex (configure databases, draft performance review, strategy doc) | ~25 | ~150 |
Read horizontally, that table is the entire decision. On Auto, 1,500 credits is a comfortable month. On a frontier model, 500 credits is a week.
What it costs
Plan pricing did not change with this release.
| Plan | Price (annual billing) | AI included |
|---|---|---|
| Free | $0 | Trial of Notion AI only |
| Plus | $10 per member/mo | Trial of Notion AI only |
| Business | $20 per member/mo | 1,500 Standard + 500 Select credits per member/mo, Notion Agent, AI Meeting Notes, Enterprise Search (beta) |
| Enterprise | Quoted | Everything in Business, plus zero data retention with LLM providers, SCIM, audit log, advanced security |
Verified against Notion’s official pricing page on 2026-10-22, with credit allowances confirmed against Notion’s credit help documentation and the October 19 release post. Prices are USD, annual billing; monthly billing is higher. Enterprise is not publicly priced and is quoted by sales.
The thing worth noticing is on the Plus row. Plus is $10/member/month and still only includes a trial of Notion AI. If AI is the reason you are looking at Notion, the entry point is Business at $20 — double the Plus rate. That is not new in this release, but the new credit mechanics make it sharper: a 12-person team on Plus pays $1,440/year and gets no AI allowance at all.
The team-size judgement call
If your team is under 10 people and uses Notion mostly as a wiki and database, do not buy Business for the AI. At $20/member/month you are paying a $10/member/month premium over Plus for an AI allowance that a 6-person team will not exhaust — but the premium exists whether or not you open the agent. Put the money into a ChatGPT or Claude subscription and connect it (Notion now supports the ChatGPT path for personal agents), which is exactly the arbitrage Notion itself is inviting.
If you are 10–40 people and your Custom Agents do real work, audit them before November 2. Every Custom Agent that pins a model draws on the 500-credit Select bucket. Notion’s own guidance says team Custom Agents use Select credits by default. A nightly agent that summarises a project channel is a metered job now, and a paused nightly job is invisible for exactly one week.
If you are past 50 seats, ask your account team for the AI Command Center rollout date before renewal. Spending limits and per-agent visibility are the controls that make a credit system governable, and they are announced rather than live. Signing a renewal on an unmetered-by-your-own-admin basis is avoidable — ask.
What users are actually running into
The friction here is not theoretical. Practitioners who track the product closely are already reporting exhaustion patterns that the announcement’s framing (“the vast majority of users are unlikely to run out”) does not lead you to expect. One widely read Notion-focused newsletter summarised the community reaction as members on the Business plan having “quota gone, a couple of 1,000 credit top ups gone too, and Auto, which most assumed would pick the cheapest option, burns through them fast” — and noted that the tooltip labelling the cheaper models was removed, so “picking one is mostly guesswork now.”
That last point deserves emphasis because it is a UX regression, not just a billing change. A credit system is only fair if the user can predict the price of an action before taking it. Removing the label that told you which model is cheap makes the Select bucket a lottery at 500 credits a month.
The same reporting also surfaces a second-order behaviour worth planning for: long-context conversations are the expensive way to use the AI and also the best way to get good output, because the system re-reads the conversation on every message. The advice that emerges — short tasks, batched pages, fresh sessions, results saved to a project page — works, but it is real administrative overhead that teams now have to budget in people, not credits.
A note on evidence quality: the quotes above come from a public Notion-focused publication that summarises community reports, which we have linked directly; we have not independently read the underlying Reddit threads, because Reddit blocked automated access to those pages for this article. Where we could not verify a primary thread, we are pointing at the secondary source rather than paraphrasing it as if we had.
There is one more commercial wrinkle outside the AI changes that is worth putting on the same page: Notion has also been withdrawing legacy discounts. Reporting in September and October 2026 describes the transition pricing given to former Plus-plus-AI customers ending at renewal, with users posting that their bill would double, and a long-time user reporting a move from $11.99 to $24/month. If you are on an old discount, your November 2 credit change and your renewal price change may land together — model both, not one.
What this does and does not change
Changes: AI is now a metered resource on the highest-value plan, and the meter is split in a way that penalises the exact behaviour Notion just encouraged — building Custom Agents. Longer agent runs are possible, which means the ceiling on a single job’s credit consumption went from minutes to a day’s worth of work.
Does not change: the underlying product. Notion is still a documents-and-databases workspace with an AI layer, and its competitive advantage is still that everything lives in one place with a permission model. Nothing in this release touches that. If you want the roadmap view of where Notion sits against its neighbours, read ClickUp vs Notion rather than reading the release notes twice.
The honest summary for a buyer: Notion AI got better and got metered in the same release. If you were buying Business for the agent, the deal nets out close to even — cheaper per task, capped per month. If you were buying Business for unlimited AI convenience and running Custom Agents daily, the deal got worse, and you should model it against a $20-per-seat tool that includes AI generously rather than treating the 1,500/500 split as a detail.
How this content was prepared
Transparency note: This update is based on Notion’s own October 19, 2026 release post, Notion’s “Manage your AI credits” help documentation, and Notion’s public pricing page, all checked on 2026-10-22, plus public secondary reporting linked inline. It is not sponsored, and no vendor paid for or influenced the assessment.
We do not claim to have independently tested the new agent runtime, the Auto router’s cost claims, or the credit metering. The “90% lower cost” and “credits go about 10× further” figures are Notion’s own and we label them as such; the per-task credit estimates are Notion’s published numbers, not measurements we took. Our cost modelling multiplies those vendor numbers by list prices and should be treated as planning arithmetic, not as a bill you have received. Reddit threads referenced by our secondary source were not retrievable for verification during this article, which is why the citations point at the reporting rather than at threads we could not open. Prices and credit allowances are dated in the metadata above and will move.
