Asana vs monday.com vs ClickUp AI Pricing Updates 2026
Asana, monday.com and ClickUp all moved AI to metered credits in 2026.
Asanamonday.comClickUp
The three biggest work-management vendors spent 2026 doing the same thing in three different ways: moving AI from “included feature” to “metered line item”. The prices on the pricing pages barely moved. The invoices did. If you are renewing Asana, monday.com or ClickUp in the next two quarters, the AI line is now the one that decides whether the bill is predictable.
This update covers what actually changed, what each vendor publishes today, and the arithmetic for a 10-seat and a 25-seat team. It is an editorial analysis of vendor pricing pages, vendor help documentation and public user reports — not a hands-on test of any AI feature.
TL;DR
- Cheapest AI per seat at small scale: Asana Starter. $10.99/user/mo bundles 50,000 AI Studio credits per billing account per month. No AI add-on to buy.
- Most expensive AI per seat: ClickUp. Business is $12/user/mo and AI is a separate $9/user/mo (Brain AI) or $28/user/mo (Everything AI) charged to every member of the workspace.
- Cheapest base plan, riskiest AI ceiling: monday.com Standard at $12/seat/mo bundles only 2,000 pooled credits per month, and paid plans carry a 3-seat minimum.
- The 2026 pattern is pooled credits, not per-user AI. Asana and monday pool credits at the account level, so one heavy automation can drain a team that never uses AI. ClickUp charges per member instead, so people who never touch AI still pay.
- If your team is under 10 people, do not enable workspace-wide AI on ClickUp. There is no per-seat opt-in — the add-on is purchased at the Workspace level and applies to all members. At 10 seats, Everything AI adds $3,360/year on top of the $1,440/year Business plan.
The three AI billing models in one table

ClickUp: AI is billed per Workspace, not per AI user
ClickUp’s AI is the only one of the three sold as a discrete add-on, and its billing unit is the Workspace rather than the person using AI. ClickUp’s own help documentation answers the question directly — “Can I purchase ClickUp AI for select members? No. ClickUp AI is purchased per Workspace. The fee applies to all of your Workspace’s members.”
Two consequences worth pricing before you flip the switch:
- One AI user costs the whole roster. 12 people on Business at $12 plus Brain AI at $9 is $21/user/mo — $3,024/year at 12 seats, and $2,160 of that is AI. Upgrade to Everything AI at $28 and the same team pays $40/user/mo, $5,760/year.
- Switching AI off does not stop the billing. ClickUp’s help centre is explicit: “If you turn off the AI ClickApp, you will still be billed for ClickUp AI.” You remove the add-on, not the ClickApp toggle.
Automatic AI features — Super Agents, AI Fields, AI Cards — draw on AI Super Credits, which ClickUp lists at $0.001 each, sold in $10 blocks of 10,000. Manual assistant use does not consume credits; machine-run features do.

monday.com: AI from Basic, but the pool is small and pooled
monday.com does not sell an AI SKU. It bundles credits into the work-management seat and meters everything on top. The pricing page lists AI as “available from Basic”, and each tier carries a monthly credit figure — 1,000 on Basic, 2,000 on Standard, 3,000 on Pro — with extra credits purchasable at any time.
The pricing page values 1,000 credits at $10, which puts an upper bound on what the bundled allowance is worth: $10/month on Basic, $20 on Standard, $30 on Pro. monday’s paid plans also carry a 3-seat minimum, so the smallest possible paid commitment is $27/month on Basic.
Where this bites: the credits are a pool, not a per-person allowance. Two or three people running AI blocks and an AI notetaker can consume a Standard pool that the other twenty people never touched. monday’s own admin tooling for this is AI governance → Credits Usage, which is also where top-ups are purchased — deliberately separate from seat count, so you do not have to fake a headcount increase to buy AI.

Asana: the largest bundled pool, with the harshest failure mode
Asana ships AI Studio Basic with every paid tier and pools the allowance at the billing account level: 50,000 credits/month on Starter, 75,000 on Advanced, 200,000 on Enterprise. A 5-seat Advanced workspace and a 50-seat Advanced workspace start with the same 75,000 credits.
The failure mode is documented in Asana’s own community. A Forum Leader’s credit-efficiency guide — flagged by Asana partners as the practical reference — states that at 80% consumption admins get an email, and at 100% “rules using AI Studio will no longer run”. Asana’s product-specific terms confirm the contractual side: if AI Studio credits are exhausted and you neither buy more nor authorise on-demand charges, “Smart Workflows requiring AI Studio Credits will cease to run”. Unused credits expire at the end of the subscription term and do not roll over.
Paid AI Studio Plus and Pro tiers exist above Basic. Asana does not publish their list price on the pricing page, and third-party write-ups disagree on the number, so treat them as a quoted add-on rather than a figure you can budget from a blog post.

What happens when the pool runs out — three real cases
- Asana, iDO (Asana Solutions Partner), October 2025: the agency burned “more than 4 million credits in a month, which disabled our AI rules until the next renewal.” Their own post-mortem lists the cause as a mix of a My Tasks rule using an expensive model, a catch-all condition, and a forwarded-email loop that triggered AI on every notification. Read the thread
- Asana, credit-efficiency guidance: the reason this is a design problem rather than a one-off accident is that Asana’s credit pool is shared and untrottled per rule — one runaway workflow drains the org’s month. Credit efficiency guide
- ClickUp, billing unit: the recurring complaint is structural, not a bug — teams that buy Brain for three power users discover the fee applies to all members. ClickUp’s help centre confirms the rule; the complaint is about the shape of the pricing, and it is the single most common one attached to ClickUp AI.
None of these are reasons to avoid AI in a PM tool. They are reasons to treat AI credits the way you treat cloud spend: with an owner, a monthly number, and an alert before the meter empties.
The real cost at 10 and 25 seats
Annual list price, annual billing, no discounts. AI column assumes the add-on or tier you need to get meaningful AI on each platform.
| Team size | ClickUp (Business + Brain AI) | ClickUp (Business + Everything AI) | monday Standard | monday Pro | Asana Starter | Asana Advanced |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 10 seats, per month | $210 | $400 | $120 | $190 | $109.90 | $249.90 |
| 10 seats, per year | $2,520 | $4,800 | $1,440 | $2,280 | $1,318.80 | $2,998.80 |
| 25 seats, per year | $6,300 | $12,000 | $3,600 | $5,700 | $3,297 | $7,497 |
| Bundled AI credits/month | 15,000 (10) / 37,500 (25) | 50,000 / 125,000 | 2,000 | 3,000 | 50,000 (pooled) | 75,000 (pooled) |
Three things fall out of that table:
- Asana Starter is the cheapest way to get a large AI pool. $10.99/user/mo with 50,000 pooled credits costs less than monday Standard at $12/seat with 2,000 credits, and less than ClickUp Business + Brain AI at $21/user/mo.
- ClickUp’s credit allowances are the most generous per seat (1,500 with Brain, 5,000 with Everything AI), but they are also the only ones you must buy at all — the plan itself includes no ongoing AI.
- monday’s 3-seat minimum flatters or punishes depending on size. At 25 seats the minimum is irrelevant. At 3 seats you pay for capacity you may not use.
The tradeoff decision: pick on billing unit, not on features
If your team is under 10 people: buy the tool whose AI is bundled per account, not per member. A 6-person team on ClickUp Business + Everything AI pays $40/user/mo — $2,880/year, of which $2,016 is AI that may go unused on half the seats. The same 6 people on Asana Starter pay $10.99/user/mo with 50,000 pooled credits, and monday at that size is forced into a 3-seat minimum on every plan. Small teams should choose pooled credits.
If your team is 20 people or more with 3–5 heavy AI users: the arithmetic flips. ClickUp’s pooled-per-seat credit allowance (37,500/month on Brain at 25 seats) is larger than monday’s whole Standard pool, and Asana’s 75,000 Advanced credits can be exhausted in days by one always-on rule. At that size, buy the platform whose automation is native and cheap, and keep AI for the humans who ask for it. That is the same conclusion our ClickUp vs Asana vs monday AI feature comparison reaches from the feature side.
If you are already committed to a platform: the cheapest 2026 change is not switching vendors, it is adding conditions to your AI rules. Both Asana’s post-mortem and ClickUp’s credit documentation point at the same root cause — a trigger with no filter, firing on every item.
Before your next renewal, do these four things
- Find the AI meter. Asana: Admin console → Billing → AI Studio. monday.com: Administration → AI governance → Credits Usage. ClickUp: AI credits screen. If nobody on your team knows where the meter is, you are one runaway rule away from a disabled automation layer.
- Attribute the pool to a person. “AI credits” is not a budget. “Emma’s project-intake rules, 40,000 credits/month” is.
- Add a condition to every AI rule you already run. No filter means every task creation is a billable event.
- Model the add-on against the seat count, not against the user count. ClickUp charges all members; Asana and monday charge a pool shared by all members. Neither model is free, but only one of them charges people who will never type an AI prompt.
Verdict
For a 10-person team that wants AI without a second purchase order, Asana Starter at $10.99/user/mo with 50,000 pooled credits is the cleanest 2026 deal — provided you watch the pool, because the failure mode is automation going dark, not a warning email. For teams that want per-seat AI capacity they can predict, ClickUp Business + Brain AI at $21/user/mo gives the most credits per seat, and you should accept that everyone on the roster pays for it. monday.com remains the cheapest base plan and the tightest AI ceiling — great value if AI is a garnish, wrong platform if AI is the workflow.
