Most “monday vs ClickUp vs Asana” articles compare features and declare a winner. This one does something more useful for your budget: it compares the actual per-seat cost of each tool at the team sizes people actually run — including the seat minimums and AI add-ons that quietly double the bill. If you only read the headline “$7/user/mo,” you will mis-budget.

For the broader head-to-head on features and fit, see our asana vs ClickUp vs monday hub. This page is strictly about money.

TL;DR

  • Cheapest entry per seat: ClickUp Unlimited at $7/user/mo (annual).
  • Cheapest structured tier: Asana Starter at $10.99/user/mo (annual).
  • Hidden cost to watch: monday.com charges a 3-seat minimum on every paid plan — a 2-person team pays for 3 seats.
  • AI is now mostly paid: ClickUp’s “Everything AI” add-on is $28/user/mo; Asana bundles AI credits per tier; monday.com packages AI as seat-attached credits.
  • Verdict by size: <10 seats → ClickUp; 10–25 structured → Asana Starter/Advanced; visual ops teams that accept the 3-seat floor → monday.com Standard.

The headline takeaway: ClickUp is the cheapest per seat, but “cheapest” ignores the seat minimum that only monday.com enforces.

The seat-minimum trap (monday.com)

monday.com’s Free plan covers up to 2 seats. The moment you need a paid feature (Timeline views, for example, land on Standard at $12/seat), you are billed for a minimum of 3 seats — even if only two people use the account. A two-person consultancy therefore pays $12 × 3 = $36/mo, not $24.

ClickUp and Asana have no seat minimum on paid plans. Asana’s Starter removes the seat cap entirely; ClickUp bills exactly the users you add. For micro-teams, that structural difference matters more than the per-seat sticker.

Plan-by-plan: what you actually get for the price

monday.com — $9 / $12 / $19 per seat (3-seat min)

  • Basic ($9/seat): unlimited boards, 5GB storage, unlimited free viewers. No Timeline/Gantt.
  • Standard ($12/seat): adds Timeline & Gantt, calendar, guest access, 250 automations/mo. This is where monday.com becomes a real PM tool — so the realistic floor for most teams is $12 × 3 = $36/mo.
  • Pro ($19/seat): adds private boards, chart view, native time tracking, 25K automations/mo.

Our monday.com review and the monday pricing plans update track how these tiers have shifted. The guide to building a content calendar in monday shows Standard in practice.

ClickUp — base plans and separate AI options

  • Unlimited ($7/user): List, Board, Gantt, Calendar views, docs, goals, native time tracking. This is the workhorse tier.
  • Business ($12/user): adds dashboards, timeline, mind maps, Google SSO.
  • AI options: Brain AI at $9 and Everything AI at $28 per user/month at displayed yearly rates. Check required capabilities and the complete workspace quote. Official AI pricing, checked September 15, 2026.

ClickUp’s pricing-changes update and the latest ClickUp updates cover the H2 2026 AI add-on repricing. The ClickUp review and ClickUp automations guide show what each tier unlocks.

Asana — $10.99 / $24.99 per user

  • Starter ($10.99/user/mo annual): timeline, Gantt, dashboards, unlimited automations, forms, 50K AI Studio credits. The sweet spot for most teams.
  • Advanced ($24.99/user/mo annual): adds portfolios, goals, workload, approvals, time tracking, 75K AI credits.
  • Enterprise: custom, with SAML/SCIM and governance add-ons.

Asana’s new features & pricing update and Asana AI features update detail the credit bundles. The Asana review maps features to tiers; the migrate Asana → ClickUp guide helps if you switch.

AI add-on math (2026)

AI is no longer free in any of the three:

  • ClickUp: “Everything AI” is a flat $28/user/mo add-on — expensive if every seat turns it on. For a 10-person team that is $280/mo on top of the $70 Unlimited bill.
  • Asana: AI Studio credits are bundled per tier (50K on Starter, 75K on Advanced). You do not pay per seat for AI separately, but you pay for the tier.
  • monday.com: AI is packaged as seat-attached credit bundles (~1K/2K/3K credits on Basic/Standard/Pro). The credits are included, but the seat price carries them.

Compare equivalent capabilities: ClickUp Unlimited plus Brain AI sums to $16 per user/month at displayed yearly rates; Everything AI is a broader package. Confirm eligible seats and usage conditions before budgeting.

Cost at real team sizes (annual billing)

Team size monday.com (Standard, 3-seat min) ClickUp (Unlimited) Asana (Starter)
2 paid $36/mo (3-seat floor) $14/mo $21.98/mo
5 paid $60/mo $35/mo $54.95/mo
10 paid $120/mo $70/mo $109.90/mo
25 paid $300/mo $175/mo $274.75/mo

monday.com’s column never drops below the 3-seat floor, so it stays the priciest for tiny teams and only becomes competitive at larger sizes where the per-seat rate ($12) is reasonable.

Verdict — which plan fits which team

  • Smallest teams (<10 seats) watching every dollar: ClickUp Unlimited at $7/user/mo — no seat minimum, cheapest entry, generous free plan.
  • Teams wanting structure + light bundled AI without a second bill: Asana Starter at $10.99/user/mo.
  • Visual operations teams that live in boards and accept the 3-seat floor: monday.com Standard at $12/seat — but only once you have 3+ real seats.
  • Avoid: turning on ClickUp’s $28/user/mo AI add-on for the whole team on day one, and monday.com paid tiers for a 2-person team.

Pricing is only half the story — feature fit decides whether the cheaper tool is actually usable. Our full asana vs ClickUp vs monday comparison pairs this cost analysis with the capability breakdown.
